FISM Africa announced for Cape Town, South Africa

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the College of Magic and SAMCO, the two FISM member-societies in South Africa, will be organising the 1st FISM South African Championships of Magic (SACM) to take place in Cape Town from 2 – 4 March 2012. The very best performers from around South Africa will be competing for the ultimate honour of representing Africa at the FISM World Championships of Magic in England in July 2012. The College of Magic shall be hosting the event under the President of the FISM Africa Organizing Team – Craig Mitchell. The SACM shall be the last continental championship as a stepping stone to the 2012 FISM World Championships of Magic in Blackpool. At the conclusion of FISM Africa, all continental chapters of FISM will have selected their best magicians, assuring us of a very high level of competition at the World Championships of Magic.

FISM promotes development of youth in magic with IMX

FISM and IMX announced a joint initiative that will further promote and encourage the development of youth in magic.

IMX will host the 2012 International Youth Magic Championships, officially recognised by FISM, that will welcome the world’s best young performers – under the age of 21 – as they compete for top honours. The event forms part of special focus on youth development and aims to actively encourage the next generation of young magicians – providing the support and inspiration needed to take their magic to an international FISM standard of performance.

The International Youth Magic Championships forms part of a broader training and development initiative at IMX that takes place from the 21 – 23 May 2012 in Las Vegas. The International Youth Magic Championships is there to actively encourage magic’s shining future stars. Competitors and IMX youth delegates alike will benefit from specialised workshops, lectures and coaching from some of magic’s finest instructors – and be guided in making their mark at the next FISM continental events.

On signing the agreement, Eric Eswin, International President of FISM, said: “FISM is proud to be actively encouraging the development of youth in magic with IMX. This exciting project not only introduces FISM to the next generation of performers, but provides much needed support and training for those young magicians with aspirations of one day making the World Championships of Magic. It is an ideal way to help both FISM and IMX continue to grow the art of magic.”

Craig Mitchell, director of IMX, is excited about the possibilities: “IMX provides a fantastic new international platform for young magicians to develop and elevate the art of magic. The recognition by FISM not only underlines this success but paves the way for our future stars to be a part of something truly unique …”

FISM announces Partnership with Card-Shark

FISM and Card-Shark - manufacturers of the new Phoenix deck and exclusive custom playing cards - announced a joint partnership as from the 1st Aug 2011.

Card-Shark is granted the worldwide use of the “FISM Recognised ” logo and of the “Official Partner” logo on all its products.

When the License Agreement was signed, Eric Eswin, International President of FISM, said: “This is really a win-win-situation: FISM is proud to support a high class card deck, specially developed for magicians and Card-Shark will certainly benefit from FISM’s worldwide reputation and high standards in magic”

Farewell Hank Moorehouse

With sadness we have to inform you of the passing of Hank Moorehouse (1934) on the 2nd July 2011.

He died from a stroke while on a tour in China.

Hank, was an honorary and life member of the Society of American Magicians as well as past National President. He was a member of the British Magic Circle and an honorary member of both the British Ring of the IBM and the Club Magico Italiano.

Hank was a fervent advocate of FISM and at three occasions he was an appreciated judge of the FISM World Championships of magic.

He was the driving force behind the 2008 Combined IBM/SAM convention that was based on the FISM concept.

He’ll be sadly missed by his countless friends all over the world.

Another legend leaves us

With great sadness we learned that on February 8, 2011, PAVEL died from cancer in his home in Switzerland.

Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1945 as Pavel Lubomir Pomezný, he became one of the most creative magicians of his generation.

His death is a serious loss for the magic community for, apart from being an excellent magician, he was also a prolific lecturer and writer. Everywhere in the world magicians are performing effects he invented or improved.

At the FISM World Championships in Lausanne in 1982 he was awarded the much coveted prize for invention.

We send our sincerest condolences to his family and many friends.
