In Memoriam: Remembering the Legacy of David Berglas

Written by Andrea Baioni and Aldo Ghiurmino

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of David Berglas, a true luminary in the world of magic and mentalism.

On November 3rd, 2023, we bid farewell to one of the most influential magicians and mentalists of the 20th Century. His departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt across the magic community.

David Berglas, not only a pioneer in the art of magic but also a dear friend of FISM, was a source of inspiration to many.

His impact on the magical world was immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of our craft.

In a poignant moment of reflection, we recall David's words from an interview with Genii in May 2007 (page 21), where he shared his journey into magic and his early connection with FISM.

He attended his first magic convention in 1948 in Switzerland, coinciding with the inaugural meeting of FISM.

In his own words, "considering I had not been in magic long, I was very lucky to meet and become friends with all the men who founded FISM."

A historical photograph from September 1948 captures the essence of that pivotal moment in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Standing alongside other founding figures of FISM, including Fritz Olai, Henk Vermeyden, Hans Trixer, and Bill Stickland, David Berglas played an integral role in shaping the early foundations of our beloved federation.

As we mourn the loss of this magical icon, we also celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

David Berglas will forever be remembered for his contributions to the art of magic, his friendship with FISM, and his impact on generations of magicians.

In his honor, let us continue to strive for excellence and innovation in the magical arts, inspired by the spirit and achievements of David Berglas.
